PrintFriendly for n8n
A verified node
Install the Node
n8n Cloud
n8n Cloud installs verified community nodes from the nodes panel. Only the instance owner or an admin can install a node; everyone can then use it.
- Open a workflow and open the nodes panel (select + or press N).
- Search for PrintFriendly.
- Under More from the community, select the PrintFriendly node, then select Install.
Self-hosted n8n
Go to Settings > Community Nodes, select Install, enter n8n-nodes-printfriendly, accept the community-node note, and install. See n8n's guide to installing community nodes for other setups.
Connect Your Account
- Sign in to PrintFriendly and open your API key page. Copy your key. A free key includes 100 documents a month and needs no credit card.
- In n8n, add a PrintFriendly node and create a PrintFriendly API credential.
- Paste your key into API Key and save. Leave API Base URL at its default unless support asks you to change it.
Select Test on the credential to check the key. That check never uses one of your documents.
What It Does
The PrintFriendly node has one resource, Document, with three operations.
Convert
Pick a Source Type (URL, HTML or Markdown), give it the page address or the markup, and choose an Output Format. PrintFriendly keeps the article and leaves out the ads, menus and pop-ups.
- PDF or Word (DOCX): you get a file link. Turn on Download File to attach the file to the item as binary data, so the next node can upload it, email it, or save it anywhere n8n reaches.
- Markdown, HTML or Plain Text: text the next node can use, in the
contentfield. - JSON: the article in pieces (title, author, date, text), for nodes that want one field at a time.
Options include the page size (Letter or A4), a title, header text, a header image, your own CSS, the language and text direction, and whether to keep link addresses in text output.
Read Page
A shortcut for reading, not making a file: give it a URL and get the article back as clean Markdown or as JSON. Handy for summaries and for feeding a page to an AI agent.
Get Job
Convert has a Run Asynchronously option for very long pages: the node returns a Job ID right away, and the document is made on its own. Get Job looks one up by its Job ID and, once it is done, hands you the file or text. Jobs are kept for 48 hours, and only the API key that started a job can read it.
Use it with an AI agent
Example Workflows
Save new feed items as PDFs in Google Drive
- RSS Feed Trigger. Paste the address of the blog's feed.
- PrintFriendly, Convert. Source Type: URL. Map the item's link to the URL field. Output Format: PDF. Turn on Download File.
- Google Drive, Upload. Use the binary field from the PrintFriendly node, and pick a folder.
Read a page as Markdown for a summary
- Any trigger that gives you a web page address.
- PrintFriendly, Read Page. Map the address to the URL field. Output Format: Markdown.
- An AI node, or your own step, using the
contentfield.
Convert a very long page in the background
Most pages do not need this. Use it when a page is so long that the node runs out of time.
- Any trigger that gives you a web page address.
- PrintFriendly, Convert, with Run Asynchronously turned on in Options. It returns a Job ID.
- Wait a minute or so, which is enough for most documents.
- PrintFriendly, Get Job. Map Job ID from the Convert node, and turn on Download File.
- Google Drive, Upload. Use the binary field from the Get Job node.
Instead of polling, you can set a Webhook URL in the Convert options and have PrintFriendly post the finished job to a Webhook node.
Common Questions
The credential test fails, or a run stops with a 401#
The key is wrong, or it was replaced with a new one. Copy your key again from your API key page, paste it into the PrintFriendly API credential, and test again.
A run stopped with a 402 error#
Your key has used all of its documents for now. A free key includes 100 documents a month, and the count starts again on the 1st. On a paid plan, you can turn on extra documents or raise your monthly cap on your API key page. Plans are on the API pricing page.
A run says it was rate limited (429)#
Too many documents were asked for at once. Free keys can make 10 requests a minute and paid keys 120. Add a Wait or batch step to spread the work out, or move to a paid plan.
The file link stopped working#
File links last 48 hours. To keep a file, turn on Download File and pass the binary data to the next node, such as Google Drive or an email, or save it in the same run.
The PDF is empty, or part of the page is missing#
PrintFriendly reads the public version of a page. A page behind a login or a paywall, or on a site that blocks automated visitors, can come back empty or partial. If an earlier node already has the page's HTML, set Source Type to HTML and map it in.
Get Job finds nothing#
Get Job only finds jobs from the last 48 hours that were started with the same API key. Check that Job ID is mapped from the Convert node, and add a Wait before Get Job so the job has time to finish.
What uses one of my documents?#
Each Convert or Read Page that works uses one document from your plan. One that fails does not. Testing the credential and Get Job never use a document.
Can I do this without n8n?#
Yes. The REST API uses the same key and the same plan. There is also a Zapier app and a LangChain loader for Python.
