Summarize
Getting a Summary
- Open the article and click the PrintFriendly button. PrintFriendly View opens over the page.
- Click Summarize in the box above the article.
- The first time, sign in to your PrintFriendly account, or create one. The summary starts as soon as you are signed in.
The summary is one short paragraph, written in the article's own language. Clicking Summarize again writes a new one.
Adding It to Your Printout
Once the summary appears, tick Include this summary in Print and PDF. It then appears in a box above the article when you print or save a PDF, and is included in Word and Markdown files and copied text. It is left out unless you tick it.
The Daily Limit
Each account can make a set number of summaries in a 24-hour period. Every click of Summarize counts, including asking again on the same article. A summary that fails doesn't count.
When you reach the limit, PrintFriendly tells you the time you can start again, in your own time zone. Your whole allowance comes back at that time.
What Is Sent to Make a Summary
PrintFriendly sends the article's text to Google's Gemini AI, which writes the summary. The page's address and title are not sent with it, and nothing happens until you click Summarize.
PrintFriendly doesn't save the article text or the summary. It keeps only a count of how many summaries your account has made, for the daily limit.
Hiding the Summarize Box
Click the X on the box and choose Always Hide, or Hide Once to hide it until you close PrintFriendly View. To bring it back after Always Hide, switch on Show the Summarize box in Settings and click Save.
Where It Works
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, including Safari on iPhone and iPad.
Common Questions
Why do I have to sign in?#
Each summary is written by an AI service, and the daily limit is counted per account. Any PrintFriendly account works; you don't need a paid plan.
The summary misses the end of a long article#
On a very long article, Summarize reads only the first several thousand words, so the summary covers that part.
It showed an error instead of a summary#
Click Summarize to try again. A failed summary doesn't count toward your limit. If it keeps failing on one page, the page may not have enough article text for PrintFriendly to read.
The summary is in a different language from my browser#
Summaries are written in the language of the article, not the language your browser uses.
Can I copy the summary?#
Select the text and copy it, or tick Include this summary in Print and PDF and use Copy Text or Copy as Markdown in the Save menu, which copy the summary with the article.
