PrintFriendly

Browser Extensions

Screenshots

The PrintFriendly extension takes two kinds of screenshot. Full Page Screenshot scrolls the page and joins the pieces into one tall image. Current View Screenshot captures just what is on your screen.

Taking a Screenshot

  1. Open the page and click the PrintFriendly icon in your browser toolbar.
  2. Choose Full Page Screenshot for the whole page as it appears, ads included, or Current View Screenshot for only the part you can see.
  3. For a full page screenshot, wait while the progress bar fills. Switching tabs or clicking Stop Capturing cancels it.
  4. The screenshot opens in a new tab next to the page.

You can also open Screenshot in PrintFriendly View's toolbar. PrintFriendly View closes first, so the screenshot is of the original page.

Saving, Printing and Converting

The screenshot tab has four buttons for saving or printing it:

  • Image saves a JPEG, or a PNG if you choose. A very long page can be saved as several numbered files.
  • PDF splits a long screenshot across Letter or A4 pages, following your Paper size setting.
  • Print prints it.
  • OCR saves a PDF whose text you can search and select, when PrintFriendly can read the page's text.

Settings

Open Settings in PrintFriendly View, change what you need, and click Save.

  • Image format, on the Screenshots tab. JPEG is the default and makes smaller files. PNG keeps text and line art sharper.
  • Per-screen delay, under Full Page Capture on the same tab. It adds a pause before each step of a full page screenshot, up to 3 seconds, for pages that load slowly.
  • Default action, on the General tab. Set it to Full Page Screenshot or Current View Screenshot and the toolbar icon takes that screenshot in one click, without asking.

Keyboard Shortcut

On a computer, Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+9 takes a full page screenshot. It stays off until you switch on Enable keyboard shortcuts on the Keyboard Shortcuts tab of Settings and click Save.

To use different keys, change them in your browser's extension shortcuts settings. Keyboard shortcuts are not available on iPhone and iPad.

Where It Works

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, including Safari on iPhone and iPad.

Screenshots don't run on browser settings pages, extension stores, or pages the extension opens itself, such as a screenshot you already took. They work on printfriendly.com like any other site.

Common Questions

It says “Full-page screenshot isn’t possible on this site”#

Some sites use frames or moving parts that block a complete capture. Try Current View Screenshot instead, or open PrintFriendly View to print the article or save it as a PDF.

Parts of the page are blank or missing#

The page probably loads its content as you scroll, and the screenshot moved on before it arrived. Set a Per-screen delay of a second or two and try again.

If the content scrolls inside a panel rather than the whole page, PrintFriendly scrolls that panel for you.

I expected a PNG but got a JPEG#

Image saves a JPEG unless you change it. Set Image format to PNG on the Screenshots tab of Settings and click Save.

My screenshot saved as several files#

A very long page is too tall for one image file, so it is saved in numbered parts. Choose PDF instead to keep it in one file.

The OCR PDF isn’t searchable#

PrintFriendly takes the text from the page itself, so text that is part of a picture can't be searched. It also reads only languages written in Western European letters, such as English, French, Spanish or German. When it finds no text at all, it tells you the PDF isn't searchable.

The keyboard shortcut does nothing#

Keyboard shortcuts are off until you turn them on. Switch on Enable keyboard shortcuts in Settings and click Save.

Is my screenshot uploaded anywhere?#

No. PrintFriendly makes the image and the PDF in your browser, and it captures only the tab you start from.

Something else? Contact support with the address of the page you were capturing.
