PrintFriendly for Zapier
New on Zapier
What It Does
PrintFriendly adds one action and one search to Zapier.
Convert to Document
Give it a web page address, some HTML or some Markdown, and pick a format. PrintFriendly keeps the article and leaves out the ads, menus and pop-ups.
- PDF or Word: you get a file. The next step can upload it, attach it to an email, or save it anywhere Zapier reaches.
- Markdown, HTML or plain text: you get text the next step can use, for example in a note or a document.
- JSON: the article in pieces (title, author, date, text), for steps that want one field at a time.
Optional settings: a title, the page size (Letter or A4), a line of header text, a logo above the title, your own CSS, the language and text direction, and whether to keep link addresses in text output.
Run in the Background
An option on Convert to Document, for very long pages. The step finishes right away with a Job ID, and the document is made on its own. To get it, add a Find Job step later in the Zap.
Find Job
Looks up a background job by its Job ID. It tells you whether the job is done and, once it is, gives you the file or text. Jobs are kept for 48 hours, and only the API key that started a job can find it.
Connect Your Account
- Sign in to PrintFriendly and open your API key page. Copy your key. A free key includes 100 documents a month and needs no credit card.
- In Zapier, add a step, search for PrintFriendly, and pick Convert to Document or Find Job.
- When Zapier asks you to connect PrintFriendly, paste your key into the API key box and continue.
Zapier checks the key as soon as you connect. That check never uses one of your documents.
Example Zaps
Start from one of our templates, or build your own with the steps below.
Each example starts with something that starts the Zap, then PrintFriendly, then the place the file goes. In the PrintFriendly step, map the address or text from the step before it.
These need a paid Zapier plan
Save new blog posts as PDFs in Google Drive
- RSS by Zapier, New Item in Feed. Paste the address of the blog's feed.
- PrintFriendly, Convert to Document. Source type: Web page URL. Map the item's link to Web page URL. Output format: PDF.
- Google Drive, Upload File. Map File from the PrintFriendly step, and pick a folder.
Save new bookmarks as PDFs in Dropbox
- Raindrop.io, New Item.
- PrintFriendly, Convert to Document. Map the bookmark's link to Web page URL. Output format: PDF.
- Dropbox, Upload File. Map File from the PrintFriendly step.
Make Word files in Google Drive from a list of links
- Google Sheets, New Spreadsheet Row. Pick a sheet with a web page address in column A.
- PrintFriendly, Convert to Document. Map column A to Web page URL. Output format: Word document (DOCX).
- Google Drive, Upload File. Map File from the PrintFriendly step, and pick a folder.
Save favorite bookmarks as Notion pages
- Raindrop.io, New Favorited Item.
- PrintFriendly, Convert to Document. Map the bookmark's link to Web page URL. Output format: Markdown.
- Notion, Create Page. Map Content from the PrintFriendly step to the page content, and Document title to the page title.
The same pattern works with other apps: new WordPress posts as PDFs in Google Drive, Feedly articles you save for later as PDFs in OneDrive, or new feed items emailed as PDFs with Gmail.
Convert a very long page in the background
Most pages do not need this. Use it when a page is so long that the PrintFriendly step runs out of time.
- Any trigger that gives you a web page address.
- PrintFriendly, Convert to Document, with Run in the background set to True.
- Delay by Zapier, Delay For. One minute is enough for most documents.
- PrintFriendly, Find Job. Map Job ID from step 2.
- Google Drive, Upload File. Map File from the Find Job step.
Common Questions
Zapier says my API key was not accepted (401)#
The key is wrong, or it was replaced with a new one. Copy your key again from your API key page. Then reconnect PrintFriendly in Zapier with that key.
My Zap stopped with a 402 error#
Your key has used all of its documents for now. A free key includes 100 documents a month, and the count starts again on the 1st. On a paid plan, you can turn on extra documents or raise your monthly cap on your API key page. Plans are on the API pricing page.
My Zap says it was rate limited (429)#
Too many documents were asked for at once. Free keys can make 10 requests a minute and paid keys 120. Zapier waits and tries the step again on its own, so you usually do not need to do anything. If it keeps happening, spread your Zaps out or move to a paid plan.
The file link stopped working#
File links last 48 hours. To keep a file, send it somewhere in the next step, such as Google Drive, Dropbox or an email. Map the File field, not File URL: File is the document itself, and File URL is only a link to it.
The PDF is empty, or part of the page is missing#
PrintFriendly reads the public version of a page. A page behind a login or a paywall, or on a site that blocks automated visitors, can come back empty or partial. If an earlier step already has the page's HTML, set Source type to HTML and map it in.
Find Job finds nothing#
Find Job only finds jobs from the last 48 hours that were started with the same API key. Check that Job ID is mapped from the Convert to Document step. A job that is still running shows that in its status, so add a Delay step before Find Job to give it time.
What uses one of my documents?#
Each Convert to Document that works uses one document from your plan. One that fails does not. Connecting your account and Find Job never use a document.
Can I do this without Zapier?#
Yes. The REST API uses the same key and the same plan. There is also a community node for n8n and a LangChain loader for Python.
