Clean Up clears the clutter an article leaves behind

Newsletter boxes, related links, a byline printed twice: Clean Up clears the leftovers in one click, and shows you every piece it took.

Clean Up clears the clutter an article leaves behind

PrintFriendly View already drops the ads and menus. But some articles still leave bits behind: a "sign up for our newsletter" box halfway down, a list of related stories, a stray "Image" label, the author's name printed twice. Until now you clicked each one away yourself. Now there's a Clean Up button that clears them in one click.

How to try it

Open an article in PrintFriendly View: click the PrintFriendly button in your browser, then choose PrintFriendly View. Click Clean Up in the toolbar, right next to Delete.

It takes out the clutter and opens a little menu that says how many pieces it removed, grouped by kind: newsletter prompts, related links, share buttons, image labels, a repeated byline and so on. The button keeps the count on it, so you can open that menu again later.

Clean Up needs you to sign in to a free PrintFriendly account. If you aren't signed in yet, it asks when you click.

See what went, keep what you want

Nothing disappears without a trace. Click Show removed and you get a list of every piece it took. Click one to jump to the spot in the article where it was. If it took something you wanted, press Keep beside it and it goes back.

Changed your mind about the whole thing? Undo all puts the page back exactly as it was before you clicked. The toolbar's Undo does the same. So it's safe to try on any page: the worst case is one click to get everything back.

After that, print or save the PDF as usual. Clean Up only changes your copy, never the site.

Where it works

Clean Up is in the PrintFriendly extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. It sits in the editing tools beside Delete, and the extension features list has the rest of them.
